i've finally given up trying to get xp onto the laptop without using a cd or
floppy drive.

I did install xp and i even had it boot into console mode on the laptop but
i can't do much with the console mode. It's not like dos and lacks alot of
commands so no looking in other partitions etc.

Using this idea i did install an ms-dos partition and another partition with
the contents of the cd, the idea was to boot into dos and run setup.exe...
but !! you can't run setup.exe in dos mode..lol
(ok i didn't quite get that far but i did use a 98 boot disk and discovered
you can't run setup.exe from the other partition)

Though you can if it's on a cd?? hmmm i might look into it a little more
sounds weird.

well any more unusual ideas apperciated.

And if you dont' know what i'm on about i apologise, go look through
earlier thread for the jist.

thanks all who gave me some ideas.

From DOS, you don't run SETUP.EXE, run \I386\WINNT.EXE

Of course, if you're booting from a Win98 floppy you'd still want to
run Smartdrv.exe, so copy it to that floppy. Details on running
Smartdrive and a step-by-step for installing Win2K/XP/etc from DOS
should be easy to find with a Google search.
