I have a Dell 9300 with an attached Acer AL2251W 22" Wide Screen Monitor,
with Vista Ultimate.

When I first installed it I could see the complete window, then over a week
ago I lost about 2 inches from the right side of the monitor.

I then downloaded the Vista Drivers for the Monitor that I downloaded from
the Acer Website. This did not resolve the issue.

Now what is wierd, is I created another profile on my machine, this new user
was to troubleshoot another issue I am having. Well when I first logged into
the new user, the Monitor displayed correctly, no unusable black bar on the
right side. But when it asked me how to handle the monitor (display the same
desktop or extend) I chose extend and I gained the missing space again. I
tried creating another user and this time selected keep the same view and
same thing. I created another user and tried canceling the selection and
again I gained the black bar.

Now if I lower the resolution it works fine, but it is setup and is optimal
for 1680 x 1050.

Any Ideas? I can not find anything on the web about this, and it is strange
that when I first login into a new user it works correctly until the display
properties come up???

Thanks for you time.

It sounds to me that when you are selecting 'Extend' or 'Clone' Windows is
applying the same desktop resolution to both monitors, hence the incorrect
size on the external screen. As I do not have two monitors connected at the
moment, this is coming from memory, and will also depend on your graphics
driver software, but here goes...

Windows does allow independent configuration of resolutions on monitors,
though sometimes it can be hard to work out which screen you are changing.
As your laptop screen looks ok, I will assume the incorrect resolution is
being applied to the external screen. On the display options (right click
desktop->Personalize->Display Settings) you will have a panel that will show
graphical representations of the two monitors, your laptop screen will most
likely be number 1 and the monitor number 2. Though it is not obvious, the
options below (resolution etc) apply the the screen that is currently
selected above, so first click on the number 2 screen, then select the
correct native resolution from the options below, click apply and this
*should* solve your problem.

If not then I would guess the third-party control panel provided my your
graphics card manufacturer is overriding these settings, you'll have to give
me more info if this is the case.

Seb... Thank you for replying.

I have checked the Dispaly settings and it both "monitors" are set
correctly. As I said earlier, if I lower the resolution on the 22" from the
factory suggested then it works fine, so if I lower it to 1440x900 it looks
works, but the monitor is made for 1680x1050 and anything lower just does not
look as good.

I am running the latest drivers from the Manufacturer for my Video Card, and
when I had my 19" Wide Screen it worked great, and I have seen the it display
correctly at 1680x1050 before. And it displays correctly when I create a new
user/profile until Windows Mobility Center pops up to ask we how to handle
the other monitor. I feel it WMC that is somehow causing the issue, is there
a way to turn WMC off?

Make sure you have ALL the utilities for the monitor installed. Also
some monitors only work at certain resolutions when the Frequency is
set to specific a certain range. Does the monitor work at all resolutions
when hooked up as Analog and/or DVI?
