Have you installed the latest drivers for your laptop's hardware? You can
usually download these drivers from the support section of the laptop
manufacturer's web site. In particular, look for motherboard drivers. While
you're here, check to see if there are updated drivers for other components.

To see what devices are missing drivers, do the following
..
Right click My Computer and select Manage from the menu.
In Computer Management, click on Device Manager in the left hand pane.
Problem devices will be noted with a yellow question mark or red X.
Note: USB controllers will be listed at the bottom.

Good luck

The usual reason for this happening following a fresh install is neglecting
to install the core drivers for the motherboard and chipsets. These would
have come on a CD with the laptop. You should be able to download them
from the manufacturer's support site, probably via another system since you
may find that other hardware doesn't work either. All of it will come back
with those drivers.
