laptop troubles - sound & DVD rewriter

couple of problems with my dad's laptop... suddenly the sound stopped coming
through. pretty sure mute isn't secretly turned on somewhere! and media
player is definitely playing the songs. also, it defnitely has a DVD
-rewriter drive but refuses to write onto them, only does CDs...
 
Looks like the encoders for the DVD portion have been eliminated/deleted
or not installed. They may be corrupt if it worked in the past. Try to
reinstall the DVD drive with your utility disk that came with the PC.
Are you getting any system sounds like beeps, or have you tried to
play a WAV file?
