I have a friend that has a lapton (Gateway) running XP and would like to find
out if the touch pad below the keyboard can be deactivated when he's in an
environment where the mouse is usable. He ends up making eronious entries'
when the touch pad is active. I would think since all devices need drivers,
it
could just "not" be loaded on boot up ?? Any help would be appreciated.

You need to check around on his system to see what's available. Sometimes
the software for the touchpad will allow the user to disable this hardware
if a mouse in use and sometimes it doesn't...

Since we live in different states, I need to give him some more specific
directions on where to look. Would it be in the "setup" area that is accessed
when booting up by pressing "F-2", the control panel, etc. to find a spot to
allow the disabling of the "touch pad" ??

On the laptops that I've used, settings for the touchpad were accessed one
of two ways:
1) through Control Panel: Switch to classic view and look for an icon for
the touchpad.
2) through the start menu: Review installed programs under Start> All
Programs. Be sure to look in all submenus as sometimes OEMs tuck extas of
this type into folders with names like "HP Tools" or similar.
