My Toshiba Sattelite 1800 just swiches off after about five minutes - no warnings - just black screen.
CPU fan is working and clean - any ideas what could be the problem?

Hi Steve

Has it shut down or is it sleeping? My IBM laptop does the same and it's actually sleeping/reserving power.

Just a thought - might be a totally useless one though!!!

How can you tell if it's 'sleeping'?

How do you wake it?
When mine has gone black screen I press the power button to restart and it seems to reboot from scratch, so if it was just reserving power how do you reawake yours?

Usually just a key press will wake it up, but a restart may mean something else. Does it shut down even when you are using it? If so, it may be a heat problem (does it get quite hot?).

Hi again Steve

On my IBM I press Fn + F4 if it's in sleep mode and it resumes the power ok. On the IBM there's a half moon light on the keyboard which lights up when the machine is sleeping.

Have you looked at the manual to see whether there is a sleep/reserve power function?

Try my suggestion but Ian may be right in his thoughts.

All the best and let us know how you get on.

I initially thought it was a heat problem (a friend has been using this laptop for a while and says it's been doing it for ages) but I took out the CPU fan and cleaned it up and refitted it. There wasn't a great deal of dust and the CPU looks clean and the fan doesn't run all the time when the computer is running and it doesn't feel too hot at the vent where the fan exhausts.

Maybe it overheated while my friend was using it and damaged the CPU?

It was overheating - that's why it didn't feel hot by the fan - because the heat wasn't coming out, it was staying in!!
When I cleaned out the fan I didn't have any thermal paste to rebuild with - I've since applied some and yesterday the laptop ran for 15 hours without shutting down.
Fingers crossed, I think we've cracked it.
