Hi!
I am actually looking for a good retailer to buy a desktop as my laptop is not working but was wondering if anyone thinks that getting a laptop repaired is worth it (harddrive not working anymore) and if anyone knew a good laptop repairer in the manchester area?
thanks!

Welcome ..

Laptop repair are usually done by the manufacturer, by sending it back to them ... High-street repairers are a little harder to find. In most cases you'll probably find it just as cheap to buy another laptop.

My suggestion these day for buying a PC is to look at the likes of Tesco, Lydie's (sic?) Asda ... may sound daft but as they yet do not have any "knowledgeable staff" simple return it it if you have a problem and you will get a replacement or your money back. :thumb:

Don't bother with any "extended insurance/maintenance" costs ... you have a statuary 12 month warranty with them, not the PC manufacturer ... and ... if you ask your household insurance I'm sure you'll find you're covered anyway. If not, get it covered using your household insurance company.

Hope that helps. ;)

Hi and thank you for your answer muckshifter.
At the moment I don't want to send my laptop back to dell coz I'm not happy with them so I'd rather get a desktop instead (or give my money to someone else!). Problem is I'm not sure from where to buy as i'd like is to get a configured basic pc for a bit of games/movies/multitask but with the possibility to upgrade it if I ever feel confident enough to do it myself. (Don't know if i make sense!)
Thank you for your advice, :)

You'll find it very hard to "upgrade" a shop bought PC ... go along with your screwdriver and ask to see "under the bonnet" but watch out for the security guy, he'll think your up to no good. I still like to do that in PCWorld. :D

While on-board sound is not a problem, you can actually get some good sound quality these days, it is the on-board video that is the killer ... this is where most manufactures cut the corner ... to be avoided at any cost.

Look in your local papers for a 'small independent' builder, then see if they have a web site. Check for a direct contact phone number, if no phone, no buy. The small trader can offer a better PC for the same money you'd pay Dell ... may cost a bit more the higher the spec' but if you can find someone like me, Chris, Floppy and a few others here ... then you should get a good system. ;)

Start with the motherboard ... see how many on-line traders tell you what the MB is, and I'll tell you if it's any good ... no MB listed, and I won't bother looking any further.

Assuming it's the hard drive that's at fault on the laptop (likely) and not the hard drive controller (unlikely) I reckon it's worth buying a new hard drive.

A lot of the smaller guys who run private PC shops should be able to fix it for you.

There really isn't much involved in swapping out a hard drive in a laptop, apart from it can be a bit fiddly.

But if the laptop's old, you may be better off getting a new desktop model.

I believe Ian, Bex, Techy and others live in the Manchester area, they should be able to put you right on a good local supplier.
