My wife has a Toshiba M35X-S161 laptop that has randomly started
shutting down for no apparent reason. Any suggestions?

Is the fan running faster than normal, or more than it normally
would ? Maybe a vent is blocked and the machine is overheating.

If you get a copy of Prime95 (mersenne.org) and run the
Torture Test, does the computer shut down immediately ?

Does Prime95 stop and report an error ?

Can Prime95 run for long periods of time ?

Do the symptoms change, depending on whether you
are on battery or plugged in ?

Does the problem happen mostly when the computer is
idle ?

We can ask lots of questions, but really, what can you do
to fix it ? It is not like a desktop, because it can take
an hour or two to take apart. And each motherboard is unique
and fits the space provided exactly. The cables fit just
so. Finding some substitute motherboard is not as easy as
finding a sub for a desktop motherboard.

Listen to see if the fan is running.
If it isn't, the CPU overheats and shuts down.
(Mine is doing this right now.)
I Gotta take mine apart and check the fan.
