Historically, no; laptop lcds varied among vendors and were not
interchangeable - often within a given model. The current wisdom says
the same still applies; but with components (hd, optical drive, etc) in
full size laptops becoming interchangeable, I wonder if the newer
widescreens at least are interchangeable to some degree. Since laptops
are being commoditized it would not suprise me if parts like LCD screens
and keyboards are being designed against some interchangeable
manufacturing standard.

Laptop LCD's must match exactly to the model, and design of the laptop. They
are not generic. The interface between the display panel, and the display
drive circuits is designed for the particular manufacture model.

Not quite, more and more panels are interchangeble. Manufactures llike
Hannstar, Sharp and AU use the same pinout for the panelconnector. 14"
Display are almost all alike, only gateway uses a different type of
connector.

So there is a fair chance that any 15" widescreen would fit, but with
costs from 200 Euro to 700 Euro it is a rather "big" gamble.
