laptop issue with 800 X 600 display

I have an issue that I hope someone can help with.
I have a laptop that when I try to set the display resolution to 800 X
600 is occupies about half of the display in the center.
BIOS and windows splash screens the same.
I looked in the CMOS setup and could not find anything to change.
I have an old program that requires 800 X 600 resolution. Do I have a
laptop that will not support that resolution?
Anything I can do?

The Screen Stretch is disabled. Usually this is done in the BIOS
settings. Have a look on the keyboard and see if there's a Fn key
assigned to it which may look like the picture of a square within a
square.
