Laptop HDs - are they specially "protected" from mobile damage ?

I'm thinking of getting a laptop drive and a suitable case for some external
/ transportable storage

more for a backup than continual use

and hoping that laptop drives , apart from being amazingly small
will cope much better from a design point of view with movement etc.

Also , are HD heads still parked on power off or is that concept
out of date

i've seen inside a hd case and i'd guess the head assembly
moves to the side out of the way of the HD surface

thanks

Yes they are.

Yes.

Nope, it just doesnt have to be dont manually anymore, its automatic.

Its more complicated than that. They can just re
retracted from the surface but still over the surface.

thanks

think i'll treat myself to one and a nice case - it might all fit into a
shirt pocket

Most if not all current drives that land the heads in a landing zone
have a simple lock that prevents the heads from leaving that zone.

Yes.

Nope.
Either parked in a landing zone or on a headrest away from the platters.

That's the ones with headrest. They don't all have that.

They'll be about the size of a large calculator from decades ago. Not
quite shirt pocket sized.

The bigger advantage of laptop HDs for external use is that some of them
can be used without needing a power adapter. So you only have to keep
track of a USB/Firewire cable instead of toting around the power brick.

Unfortunately, not all USB/Firewire ports support power to devices. And
some external cases and/or the HDs exceed the power draw supported by
USB/Firewire cabling.

I ended up using a 2.5" enclosure that came with a PS/2 cable to plug
into either the mouse/keyboard port to supply power in those cases.
