I've not tried to repair a laptop as yet but do their hard drives have the
same physical connectors as used in a desktop computer. In other words, can
I remove the HD and connect it to my Windows XP PC?

TIA

2.5" drives do not fit on a PC where 3.5" drives do.
The connectors are not the same. Especially IDE. Not 100% sure of
SATA connectors.
There are SATA and PATA in both sizes.
But you can buy external USB enclosures to make them work on a standard
desktop.

Many thanks for all your responses.

I offered to try to fix a friends laptop which I've not yet seem. If
possible she would like to recover her files off the HD. I thought I might
be able to mount the HD as a second drive in my desktop and possibly copy
the data.

TIA
