My laptop broke the other week and I need to get some
files of the disk. I went to the store and bought a plug
that changes the laptop 40 pin hard disk to a desktop
pin. Windows 2000 recognizes the drive but when I try to
open it in my computer or explorer I get the following
error.
F:\ is not accessible
The semaphore timeout period has expired

Is the hard drive bad or is something wrong with windows
2000??

You may want to try technet.microsoft.com for this error message.

what kind of interface did you get? what is the vendor?

The company that makes it is "Cables to go". The
description is a laptop to IDE hard drive adapter with
power. I have never heard of the semaphore thing and
don't even know what it means. How can the computer see
the drive but read it at all???

All of the information I find with this message has networking involved in
one fashion or another. Have you confirmed that the Master/Slave setting is
correct? How does the drive show in Disk Management? Can you map a drive
letter to it?
