Hi:

I have a friend who has a Toshiba laptop and no longer can connect to internet. What is the best way to check it out to see if it's the hardware port itself vs software? They have tried numerous software fixes and now think it's the port itself.

Thanks

To determine if a problem is caused by Windows or hardware I like to
boot with Knoppix, a Linux distro that runs from CD. If the laptop
connects to the Internet under Knoppix, then you know it's Windows. You
can also try with a Bart's PE or other rescue system.

Hi:

She does not connect to the internet with Knoppix and has no trouble booting. She just no longer can connect to the internet with her Ethernet connection.

Try here for a PC (pcmcia) card or even the USB to Ethernet adapter..

Are you saying that she made a Knoppix disk, booted with it, and the
ethernet card was recognized but there was no Internet connection? If
this is the case, then the ethernet port is broken and your friend
should contact the laptop mftr.'s tech support for repair/replacement.

This has nothing to do with booting. Your comment about booting makes me
wonder if you don't understand what I suggested doing (Knoppix or using
a rescue disk). If you didn't get what I meant about testing with
another operating system, there is no shame in admitting this isn't
your cup of tea - have your friend take the laptop to a professional
computer repair shop for diagnosis. This will not be your local version
of BigStoreUSA.

Hi Malke:

Your answers are like asking a person what time it is and they tell you how to build a clock. However, I do appreciate your support efforts.

If you ask a question that requires a technical answer, you will get
one. You didn't ask a question that was the equivalent of "what time it
is". You asked how to tell if a problem was caused by Windows or by
hardware so that's the answer you got. I'm sorry you didn't understand
it. As I said, we all have our areas of expertise and computers are
complex and powerful machines that sometimes require quite a bit of
skill to work on.

If your friend doesn't have the computer skills to diagnose whether an
issue is caused by hardware or software, then s/he should take the
laptop to a professional computer repair shop as previously suggested.
