I have a laptop that used to belong to a specific domain. That Domain
Controller was 'decommissioned' and shut down at a time when I was not
connected to the network. Since then, I have been set up on a new Domain
(controller) at a different location, but my laptop still tries and fails to
synch to the old DC when I shut it down. How can I remove all references to
the defunct DC?

You need to remove your computer from the old domain to a workgroup, reboot
it, and the join it to the new domain and reboot. That can be done by a user
that is a local administrator via Control Panel/system/computer name -
change though a domain user account [possibly a domain admin] will need to
join it to the new domain. Your computer will also need to be configured
correctly with DNS so that it points only to the new domain controller as
it's preferred DNS server before it is joined to the new domain. --- Steve
