I am running Win XP Pro SP2 on laptop. Everytime i put my system on standby,
i have to restart it in order to get it up and runing again. Is it not
supposed to come out of standby after a key press or similar input event.

Yes, in general, that's how it is supposed to work. I had one laptop that
needed a specific key pressed to return from standby - the spacebar. This
was very understated in the user manual and almost missed that detail.

Also, there are additional settings to protect battery life for laptops.
What to do when the case is closed (hibernate, standby or shutdown).
Hibernate if the battery's power level gets low or if the system is in
standby for x number of minutes. Hibernate shuts the system down so a
"restart" is needed to get the machine going again.

If this isn't a settings problem or not pressing the right key, you will
want to contact the manufacturer's tech support to find out if there are
any standby issues on this system - with sp2 and/or without.
