Laptop connection

Is there a way to connect my laptop to my PC without
going through my network. I purchased a"Direct Parallell"
cable and performed the appropriate tasks needed to
connect to a remote computer. All signs pointed to the
fact that I was connected. I just didn't know how to get
into the files on my laptop. Can anyone help?
