I have Gateway MX6453. I recently updated the BIOS which I downloaded from
Gateway wab site.
The laptop suddently turned off while I was visiting a Yahoo site.
I pressed the power button, the laptop just fresh and turned off
immediately.
I could not turn it on.
After one night, I was able turn it on this morning and started the window.
but only it worked for 5 to 10 monites. It turned off again.
I pressed the power button, the laptop just fresh and turned off immediately
as what it did yesterday.
I do not know if it is related to the BIOS
I need advice.

Thanks

A BIOS update was not sent to you by Microsoft. Have you contacted the
manufacturer of the motherboard and/or attempted to use the backup that most
BIOS updates make to roll back to your prior BIOS version?

This laptop is installed CA security suit and update everyday. I still
suspend if this laptop has shutdown virus now
The fan is working, I opened it on the back. it was clean. I still use
vacuum cleaner to clean and blew it.
After I press power button it turn off and on again about every 10 seconds
automaticly , after a while it shutdown itself.
I put vista installation disc in dvd drive, it read the disc (from the
sound) but the screen alway black.
Help needed

Can you get into the System BIOS?
Does the machine only shut down if you try to/do boot into Windows Vista?

If you turn on the machine and can get into the System BIOS and the machine
shuts down at that point - this is 100% a hardware issue (probably BIOS
since you changed that, but there is a possibility of otherwise) and you
*will* have to get assistance from a hardware shop, the manufacturer,
another newsgroup as the problem will not be Vista.

Thanks
How to roll back to prior BIOS version.
Press F2?

No. You need a bootable disk with the BIOS updater program and a copy of
the old BIOS on it.

The computer maker's site is probably the only place to get this stuff - or
maybe the motherboard maker's site, if you can locate that.

Also, those sites would have the instructions on how to do what you want to
do. In fact, they might be the only places to get that info.

I can get BIOS screen and after I enter setup the screen is not readable but
does not shut down
I think 90% this laptop is infected by shutdown virus.

If the information in the BIOS is not legible - then that laptop has more
issues than a virus.

However - if you want to get rid of the virus/etc - then you should get the
hard disk drive manufacturer's diagnostics utility and perform a complete
zero-write on the drive (or Darik's Boot n Nuke) and then use your
installation media (you should have it and or be able to obtain it from the
manufacturer of the system) to install the OS from scratch. Then install
your other applications and restore your backups.

No backups? No installation media? Life lesson...

Thanks
The laptop is Gateway MX6454, The original OP is XP. I update to Vista
I download the BIOS update from the Gateway web site, It is update BIOS for
MX6454 and others for Vista oprating system.
I am afraid the virus also distroy the BIOS in CMOS.

What did the problem fix?

Or are you saying that the problem is fixed?

If so - mind sharing what the issue was and what you did to repair it so
everyone can benefit from your struglle and/or it is documented for
posterity?

I reinstall the Vista. Put installation disc in DVD Drive
To fix the auto shutdown I keep pressing and hold F8 then press power
button.
Enter Boot screen, Press F12 boot from DVD
Reinstall the Vista.
