LapTop Assembly

Hello:

It is very easy to build a desktop computer. The hardware is readily
available, the costs are very reasonable, and so on.
Now I am planning to build a bunch of my own LapTop computers. However this
do-it-yourself path seems never to be encouraged and I have never seen
anyone selling the parts that can be used to assemble a LapTop.

* If I wanted to assemble my own LapTop, where can I get the various
parts ?

Thanks,
Jo Halvard.

This really has nothing to do with hardware working on the XP operating
system, which is the focus of this newsgroup.

You'd be best off starting with Google and then looking for some forums
covering what you want to do.

For instance, this Google search has quite a few links that look promising:

You would have to find a single company which sells individual parts for
assembly as there is no standard for laptop parts and layout, I have not
seen such a company nor would it likely be cost effective. Parts such as the
logic board, case, LCD, batteries, and power supplies are not
interchangeable among laptops, many times not even among the same brand.

Laptop tend to have all possible component directly "soldered" onto
the motherboard. It tend to unfeasible (too much money) to be a
hobbyist in creating / assembling a few laptops.

By the time that you have located all of the parts required, paid shipping
and handling on them, sat for a good while putting them all together (high
level of dexterity required), and then paid for an OS for each one, you
would be wondering why you didn't buy them ready assembled c/w OEM OS and
saved yourself a bunch of money and time..

There are "barebones" laptops available. The low end ones might
have everything integrated into the motherboard. As the assembler,
you might install a processor, memory, hard drive, optical drive
and so on.

The next level up, would be a barebones laptop with an MXM interface or
something similar. MXM is a pseudo-standard for Nvidia mobile
graphics. MXM allows graphics to be upgraded. I've never seen
MXM graphics cards advertised for sale at retail, and have no
idea which partners sell them, or how you'd get them. The
reason I say "pseudo-standard", is not every module you
find floating on Ebay, may be compatible with your notebook.
There are web pages which give details on MXMs you might
find for sale on Ebay.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MXM

This is an example of a barebones.

Playing with the guts...

There is likely a minimum purchase from a distributor, and
I don't know how you'd get an evaluation unit to check
out. To be competitive, you have to decide what market
segment is not properly covered by the likes of HP/Dell/Acer
etc., because those companies will easily be able to beat
you on pricing. So whatever you choose to assemble, it
had better offer compelling features.

In other words, there is no good reason to be building laptops.

I remember looking at some barebones laptops a few years
ago, and the starting price for the barebones, without
a processor or other guts in place, was $1000. I don't
know how you'd make a profit, from a build, using a
"component price" like that.

Have fun,
Paul

You could build your own laptop using a mini-itx board and a LCD display
kit, but you would have to build most of the components yourself from
scratch including the case and it would be very expensive and probably
not as light or as mobile as one you can buy already made. The only
advantage of it would be you could upgrade easily when you needed to
change a motherboard. It is not very cost effective though as you can
get low end laptops for around $500.00 or so these days. It would be
nice if laptop vendors would standardize so you could just change out
components, but they would lose a lot of money that way since you would
not necessarily have to buy a new laptop every new technology came out.
It is not likely that they will ever do that.

Z.K.

One company makes a laptop you assemble some of it yourself, but it's
underpowered and overpriced.
