laptop as dumb terminal

I have been using big/ old monitor for few years. It is hooked up to windows
xp pc. I am wondering if it is possible to purchase a laptop and use it as
dumb terminal (monitor and keyboard replacement). I will still use the
existing software in the pc tower.

It would be A LOT simpler to just buy an LCD flat panel display. Probably
less expensive too.

Some software MIGHT work through Windows/MSN Messenger's applicstion sharing
capabilities if you equip both systems with local area networking
capabilites. Srceen updates would probably be a bit sluggish when they do
prove compatable.

Thanks for the reply..I know I need to use laptop on trips. When I am home,
I can use laptop as dumb terminal by plugging into serial port at the back
of pc. Do others do that?

What you are talking about doing is basically not practical.

If you connect the machines, connect them as a network with a cross-over
ethernet cable. Setup a network. Use the two machines as a two-machine
network. Read in 'help' about networking.

You can also use Remote Desktop to go from the laptop to Desktop.

Robert's idea of getting a LCD screen for desktop is good. Don't make
you life too complicated.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Hi Rob and others,

I am seeing that I make things complicated.
I have given thoughts to Remote Desktop.

Right now I have wired Linksys hub with two pcs plugged in. Both are
assigned different IP addresses. I am wondering about buying wireless
router to be plugged to the existing hub.
Then plug laptop to the wireless router. So that I can go outside within 200
feet or less with laptop.

Please let me know if I still make it more complicated.
Thanks for the reply. alan

Both MUST have different IP addresses. That's how it's supposed to work.

You can't plug the laptop into the wireless router. That's the point.
It's wireless. You use a wireless adapter on the laptop to communicate
with the router (via the antenna on the router). This will work.

Read carefully the instructions for how to do this with the equipment
you buy.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Rob,

Rob,

I am sorry what I had said! of course, I know laptop should not be plugged
to wireless router.. Please overlook what I had said.

I did mention that both ip addresses are assigned differently to both
pcs...Nevermind.. thanks for the reply.
