Hey y'all,

Had a search around on here and couldn't find a lot to do with Lapping.

Saw in one thread that V_R and AdyWebb were considering it last year.

So, did it get done??? Much difference??? Anyone else had a play???

I've read quite a few posts on it on other forums and it seems like quite a good idea, as most peeps seem to have between 5C - 9C and upto 12C temp difference.

Thought i might have a go as i'm gonna get a OCZ Vendetta 2 HS+F for my Q6600.

My Q6600 doesn't run that hot at an OC of 3.0Ghz but was very impressed with results i've seen, so i want one and am going to get one.

I never bothered in the end, think ady may have tho. :)

I have lapped my Thermalight Ultra 120 Extreme heatsink. Can not say if it made a difference to temps as I didi it from new. It certainly made a difference to the surface and did not take too long. Took out a couple of high spots and left an almost mirror finish. To get the best results you need to lapp the cpu cover aswell though not many folk do that. You could of course finish off with grinding and polishing paste , similar to the sort you use on engineering parts.

I bought a paper kit of E-Bay as I was finding it hard to buy the correct grade of paper locally. Was cheap and convenient and I still have enough paper left for several more lapping projects.

Yeah I would call it polishing to..Tome lapping is something you do to the valves on you car when they need re-seating...

Yeah cheers mate i found it on the other thread, bought some earlier.

Am gonna practice on a stock Intel HSF first and maybe buy a 99p 1Ghz pentium 4 to break as well.

Which, when you think about it, is pretty much the same thing, kinda...

I lapped a heatsink once, for an Abit KT7-RAID machine, probably a Duron 1Ghz CPU. It took forever, looked great and didn't actually make much difference, about 2C as I recall.

I'd rather put my faith in Arctic Silver to sort out the mating anomalies but whatever, if you have time to waste, go buy that emery paper.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend ;)

It is kinda satisfying but to me it seems like an awful lot of effort for a relatively small return.

Maybe it's me

Oh no offence taken mate, was gonna go snowboarding but broke me toe, that and not smoking for 12 days.

Yeah went pretty good,

Had a practice on a Intel E4300 stock @ 1.8Ghz and the half height stock Cooler that came with it.

Using Core Temp i got the following

E4300 and HSF Idle was 32C full load was 48C

E4300 with Lapped HSF idle 30C full load was 47C

E4300 lapped with lapped HSF idle 27C full load 42C

After a couple days to " burn in ".

Temps are this morning;

E4300 Lapped with lapped HSF HSF idle 26C full load 40.5C

I think thats pretty good considering it cost me £4 for the kit and took about an hour to do the CPU and about 30 mins for the HSF.

Thems darn good results. Your brave to have lapped the cpu aswell. Thats a pretty good way to get a decent overclock without raising temps above the original temps. Of course the results will depend on how uneven the cooler was in the first place.

The Cooler was pretty flat to be honest as it doesn't employ heatpipe technology, the CPU was not flat at all, think of an extreme cone shape, high in the middle and lower at the edge.

Gonna do my Q6600 at some point, CPU was actually easier to do.
