Win XP HE SP2
Follow-up to: microsoft.public.windowsxp.newusers

Hi, I just bought a new computer and when turning in on, I had to go
through the Windows XP (OEM) set-up.
I answered a few questions and chose Location I live in: US, Language I
most often use: English and Keyboard: US.
HOWEVER, I would like to know IF I can go back and re-run the set-up OR
modify from Control Panel and choose Language: Italian.
If yes, will this install XP in Italian or only some characters, etc.
Tx. S

Install the Italian keyboard. No doesn't install XP in Italian.

You'd only get Italian keyboard layout with support for the various accented
characters, and some other regional differences (such as time and date
formats). You would not get any of the Windows menus, etc. in Italian --
for that you need an Italian version of Windows, which is a completely
different product.

You can change all of those options at any time -- Control Panel, Regional
and Language options.

Windows CDs are available in an astonishing variety of languages. If you want to use the Italian version of Windows, you need to purchase that CD. (You will be purchasing the version of Windows designed for use in Italy, not an Italian translation of the U.S. version.)

The questions you were asked during setup have to do with the arrangement of keys on a keyboard as well as the representation of such things as currency and dates.

"But why would we be given the option to choose the European way for displaying dates in the U.S. version of Windows?" Look...I don't have all the answers. ;-)

Hi,

No, but you can add additional language support for the keyboard in the
Control Panel under Regional and Language options. On the languages tab
click details. The base installation is probably in English, and unless it
is a multi-language version you cannot change this. I don't know of any OEM
versions distributed in this fashion. Even if it were, you would have to
start from scratch to change the installation language.

Windows XP is written in specific language versions, therefore one
cannot change it from one language version to another. You'll need
to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP in the language version
you desire, reformat your drive and install it "clean".

Or if you have an available empty drive or partition, you can install
another "Full Version" of Windows XP in a different language version
and create a dual-boot configuration.

A good third-party partitioning program is Partition Magic 8.

The language selections made during installation, or subsequently via
the Control Panel, affect only the input language and the keyboard's
special character's configuration.

If you want an Italian version of Windows, you'll need to purchase one,
format the hard drive, and then install it. (Or create a dual-boot
scenario.)
