Hi
I am trying to connect my desktop PC with my laptop, both
running Win2000, with LAN cards.
I have a cross over cable, and both are showing that they
are connected to each other - as per the connect icon.
Sharing is set up on both HDD's
IP Addresses are both set to auto.
When I try to transfer files, by seleting My Network
Places, Workgroups - the other PC is not found.

Any Ideas ?

Regards

Are they both on the same Workgroup?
right click my computer, network identification.

Just because the network icon appears, doesnt mean that it is correctly
communicating with the other machine, just that it knows its connected to
something.

Do you have file and printer sharing enabled?
network neighbourhood -> properties
install FPS if it is not already in the list

HI Andrew

Thanks for that - I have just looked up one of your
previous postings.
Both are on the same Workgroup, but I have noticed that
the desktop doesn't see itself, under My Network Places/etc
I do have FPS enabled.

Try installing the IPXSPX protocol, which comes with netbeui/netbios.

When you browse network places, does it complain? or is it just an empty
list

Hi Andrew

Installing IPXSPX didn't work - same problem.

When I try and open My Network Places, after a wait of
about 60 secs, the Workgroup opens.
When I click on the workgroup, I get an error
stating: 'The List of servers for this workgroup is not
currently available.'

MS give a fix for this, by 'Using NetBios from the DHCP
server', in TCP/IP properties, Advanced/WINS - but that
didn't work either !

Goto services on the lower spec of the two machines, and disable "computer
browser".
Only do this on ONE machine.

You should do this anyway, it probably wont fix the problem entirely, As
marina suggests, if we can see the ipconfig /all we can probably give a
better diagnosis.
