I need a Windows-based chat/file transfer program that will allow
me to chat with a buddy on a different subnet/domain on our network.
Any suggestions?

If you can not ping the other computer on your network, you will not be
able to use a Lan IM. If you can ping the other computer, any Lan IM
will work.

The only way to have a Lan IM work that you can not ping the other
computers is by having a Lan IM that uses a server to talk to it's
clients.
