Computers being so cheap and available, I have one good machine for
working with graphics at home, a laptop, and one for the internet. They
are lanned together but do not share an internet connection. Since all
this trojan stuff is going on, can a virus transmit itself through the LAN
into the other two computers?

Yes. Very much so.

If you are going to setup a peer-to-peer network (2 or more PCs sharing
resources without a server) the I would strongly recommend installing
anti-virus/trojan/spyware on each PC conected to the LAN

Malware can propagate over any network (Internet, Intranet, LAN, "isolated"
network, or whatever).

Oppliger and Stallings have some readable books that cover the subject quite
well. If
you are interested in "securing" your network, I recommend them to you.
