Greetings..

Am perplexed with LAN protocols.. running Win2k Server and 5
Workstations.. and it seems NetWare NWLink NetBIOS is required
or the WorkGroup is not accessible.

Is NetBEUI not sufficient to run a Windows LAN?

In addition.. after reading through the forum.. must mention that NFW
is operating and `Inbound / Outbound NetBIOS' is blocked. Can someone
suggest an exception to the firewall rules?

I'd like to turn off Netware Link NetBIOS.

Also.. in Control Panel, System, Network ID, Properties, More, `Change
Primary DNS Suffix' is unchecked. What about this setting for a
Workgroup?

NetBEUI _is_ sufficient to run a Windows Lan. Be advised, though, that
NetBEUI will not work across any router (works in local subnet only)
and that WindowsXP does not install NetBEUI by default (you must
manually install from CD).

NetWare is neither required nor needed to run a windows network.

The most common implementation is NetBT (NetBios over Tcp/IP). This
will work across routers if a WINS server is available or appropriate
entries are placed in the "lmhosts" file. It uses TCP ports 137 - 139
and also 445 which can easily be blocked by firewalls (and often is --
for good reason).

John
