I would like to set up a messaging srevice on our small lan. I need point
and click recipient selection and peer to peer environment.
I have seen some but didn't like something about them. Usually they require
a server or you have to type in the name of the recipient machine, which
will not do as I have one particular user who is elderly and can't type very
well.

Thanks in advance.

You could try Winpop Plus by Wired Red

see LAN chat enterprise at

http://www.kgysoft.com/alc.html

It's not freeware, though. But you can try it out for 30 days to see if
meets your requirements It's a chat program, but you can also send files and
a lot other stuff, so check it out and see. It's like you click on
computer's name and send, no need to enter IP or name.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will check them all out and let you know
which one works for us.

You may try some of VyPress utilities (http://www.vypress.com -
especially try Vypress Messenger) or WinMessenger
(http://www.winmessenger.com).

In responce to this I have a couple of questions.

1, Out of interest I tried a couple of the suggested lanchat programmes
and there is one XP machine on my network that for some unknown reason
cant been seen.

2, Using Look@LAN it dosent find that machine except during bootup then
within less than a minute it reports the machine/ip as beeing offline.

This is frustrating as the lan chat programmes all look pritty good and
would be handy in my current setup.

As far as seeing the actual machine on the network it is fine, file
sharing fine and internet sharing all fine, I have compared the network
settings to my XP machine and they appear identicle.

There is also a win98 machine up stairs and thats ok, same with a win98
laptop and my file server. It's just this one XP machine and I really
dont want to have to resort to re-installing windows as that dosent
really solve the mystery so to say.

Any suggestions?

Jason
