Is it possible to make a simulated LAN using internet ?
I want to play some old games with my friend, we have tried
to connect to each other using WinXP VPN and we succed to make
flashing icon appears on the taskbar. Although, we can't see
each other like in LAN so obviosly something is missing.
Does somebody know correct procedure for this kind of connection,
or any software that could help us ... tnx

Have you both "shared" the drives/folders you want to access? Do any of
your programs require the IPX protocol or even NetBEUI to run? IPX is
easily installed but if NetBEUI is required, you need two files located on
the WinXP CD to load it up. I doubt you need NetBEUI but most older games
that worked across a network did require the IPX protocol.

I use Cisco VPN so I can't help with the WinXP VPN.

will netbui even work across the internet I thought it was a non
routable protorcol ( could be I don't totally understand vpn here)

It is but if he's using a VPN then he should be able to map to a drive on
the other end. At least that's what I did when I was running Win98SE and
Cisco VPN. I had NetBEUI installed for the "local" LAN and I "assumed" it
was also necessary to get to the mapped drive but I never tested it without
NetBEUI being configured.

Good question....

Is "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" enabled and have you
enabled sharing a drive/folders that each of you want to access?

Cisco is a hardware/software manufacturer and no - their VPN software is
nowhere near being free. The WinXP VPN service should work just fine once
you have it configured.

Go to Start > Help and Support > type in "VPN" (no quotes) in the Search
window.... follow the instructions and then see what happens. This will
save us a lot of typing of instructions.

As for protocol being irrelevant - not so. Most network aware games that I
know about require IPX. But since you're using it already, I can understand
why you think it is for your purposes. IPX was needed for network games but
since I don't mess with the games anymore I'm not up on that.

It's irrelevant what protocol we use (and we use both, TCP & IPX), I just
don't understand when the icon is flashing at the taskbar and shows that we
are connected to each other, why we can't access to each other PC like in
LAN ? What's Cisco VPN ? Is it free and can it help us to play games over
internet ?

Yes

We want to play games, not to share files or folders

Done that before asking here ...

Thanks anyway

Only other suggestion I can think of is - the game at one end must be setup
as the Server and the other computer as the Client.
