Hi,

this is the first time I write here. I'm from Italy and I hope my
English is good enough to explain my problems.

I bought a lan drive with FTP / SMB server. Connected to the Ethernet
port of my router I can configure it through the web interface. Here
some details:

Host Name FILESERVER
Group Name HOME
IP 192.168.0.254
SubnetMask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1 (my router's IP)
Primary DNS 192.168.0.1

Well, the FTP server works fine and I can reach it writing the IP
address in Internet Explorer.

What I can't do is reach the FTP server using the host name
('fileserver') nor browsing the hard drive via 'network resources'. In
the latter case Windows says I haven't permission to access.

Please note:

+ the group name is the same of my desktop PC
+ Explorer sees the 'fileserver' pc in the LAN (also NET VIEW does)
+ My account is 'Administrator'
+ Windows firewall is disabled and I haven't any other firewall enabled

May you help me, please?

Thanks

Met this one before, chances are the box uses Linux, and doesn't have the
netbios broadcast daemon (nmbd) running so it doesn't announce itself to the
network.

If the box has a samba option (file sharing) then try starting that, it may
activame nmbd at the same time

If that fails there are various workarounds, simplest is to put the IP and
hostname into the local hosts file. This is found at
\windows\system32\drivers\etc.

A better solution for larger networks is to install a DNS forwarder such as
dnsmasq (Linux) or the MS DNS server(Windows) and create a local zone with
machine names - though this may be overkill for a small LAN.

This solved both problems. Thank you very much!
