I have Win 2000 Pro and after a recent re-install I am
experiencing a LAN connection delay of around 5 mins
before it mysteriuosly decides it will connect. Error
message is the standard "Cannot detect network". I have a
cable modem. Any ideas much appreciated.....

Do you have right network settings?
can you post your entire netwrok settings here?

This is normally a NIC Driver issue. The OS is trying to detect Link State
of the Network Adapter but the Network Adapter has not passed it to the OS.
The Link State of an Adapter is determined by the Driver after it has
negotiated all it's need paramaters with the connecting device.

Thank you for your replies.

Could you tell me what I have to do to get around this
issue.

Many thanks

You should look for an updated driver for the NIC first. You could also
disable DHCPMediaSense, this will really won't correct the problem though.
