I was just cleaning out my temp directory and there's one file that I
can't delete ("Access Denied. Source file may be in use").

Anyone know what this is and/or how to get rid of it?

Thanks, Bob - that did it.

I'd done a short Google and it didn't tell me anything about what it
does that made any sense to me. Also, there seemed to be some suggestion
that it couldn't be removed even in safe mode. I guess that was wrong.

Now that I've put all my desktop icons back where they used to be ..... :-)

by the way if I ever need to go in under safe mode I use another admin
enabled account, that way my accounts layout remains untouched

Yes, we discussed this before Steve, and this was my opportunity to try
it out. I do have a second admin account set up and I was going to
log-on under that account. Problem is that I'm setup so that my main
logon is automatic and apparently that's still true during safe boot.

I would have had to reset to require the login before I did the safe
mode boot (which I failed to do) and then change it back afterwards (and
if I'm honest, it starts to look like almost as much work as rearranging
the desktop).

I've always thought this is a pretty sloppy part of Windows, over
several versions. After all, it remembers the desktop layout between
regular boots so it seems trivial to save it for use after a safe boot.
Shouldn't need heroic efforts.

Re your link (which looks like it might do the job). I don't have the
resource kit - is there anywhere else I can get layout.dll ?

IIRC hold down the shift key in boot up to pick a log on window.

I tried this from the time I selected the OS (it's a multiboot) to after
the first Windows loading screen and it didn't work.

Maybe I'm not doing it at the right time ... I'll experiment.
