Lacie External d2 HD

I got one of these to backup large .avi and other movie files for video
editing. It had to be formatted on first use to NTFS file sys as instructed
in the user docs supplied. This went fine and the unit was detected and
allocated a drive letter. Copying files over to the Lacie was no problem,
and I put approximately 4 GB worth of files on it. The problems started
when I tried to copy files to CD/DVD or even back to a internal HD in the
PC. The copy would start but after a couple of minutes, it would stop
completely and that was that. It seemed to be just the larger files that
would not copy. The folders and smaller files were copied back.
Has anybody got any useful insight as to what I may be doing wrong ?
Btw, I used the USB 2 connection at first, and then tried the Firewire 400.
Both had the same outcome. Unfortunately, I don't have Firewire 800 on my
PC, so I can't try that.

XP Home Edition (SP2)
Athlon 3.4GB 64bit
3 internal HD's. All Western Digital units.
1 GB Kingston Dual Channel RAM

If it were out of warranty I'd suggest opening it up and
seeing how hot the bridge chip is getting, but inside the
warranty I suggest seeking a FAQ on their website, emailing
them, then returning it for refund.

Also I've heard vague murmors that WinXP's SP2 may wreck
havoc on USB ports... you might try deleting all USB-related
entries in Device Manager and reboot, or do some online
searchs for SP2 & USB, or for your particular motherboard.
If you had a 2nd external drive (of a different make) it
would be easier to troubleshoot this.

VIdeo editing over USB is not so great performance-wise,
you'd be better off reserving the external drive for
archival or backup storage.

It's a brand new unit..I've returned it today for a refund and will be a lot
more thorough researching these external drives before I choose another.
I've lost the files I put on the disk :(
