i have a kvm swich that is pictured here
http://www.suresmooth23.com/suresmooth23/4port_KVM_Switch/4port_KVM_Switch_g.jpg
and i have 2 computers connected to it. i run the first computer 24/7
and the second as and when i need it. when i boot the second computer
the mouse stops working on the first. if i pull the mouse out of the
kvm and put it back then it works on the first and not the seccond.
ive not found a way of makeing it work on the seccond again.
can anyone tell me how to solve this problem, if they cant can i
atleast know why its happening.

both computers run windows xp pro and both use a ps2 connecter.

there are many bad kvm switches. That one may be a cheap clone of the
zonet kvm 3004. It's a 4 port kvm switch that works extremely well
and looks exactly the same as that. Rated extremely highly on newegg.
I have one. I recommend the Zonet

check reviews of a kvm switch before buying. Or buy a good make!

There is an issue - regarding ps2 and prob USB connectors and KVM
switches. The issue being that they could in theory get their power
from them.
My Zonet KVM 3004 KVM switch has a socket for an AC adaptor, but it
works without one 'cos it gets power from the ps2 mouse connectors.
You see the lights go on or off if a mouse connector is put in or all
mice connectors are taken out.
This can be a problem because when a computer or rather, its ATX power
supply, is in standby, or perhaps, hibernation. (one of the two or
both, i'm not sure). IT still sends power - 5V , blah watts- out the
USB and PS2 sockets. So the KVM that isn't powered by AC, can get
confused over whether the computer is on or off. And it can even
crash .. This may have happened with my zonet. Or perhaps KVM switches
I owned before the zonet. I think I got around it by not letting my
comps go on standby.
IT'd be interesting if people can list KVM switches that take power
ONLY from ACDC, not from ps2 or USB.

Anyhow, I don't think this mouse issue that I speak of is your issue.

Though if your KVM gets its power from the mouse connector, your
problem may be an electronic fault in the KVM related to that. But I
doubt it. Since your KVM isn't crashing like mine did with the 5V
thing.

I did have a mouse not working issue with another KVM, but it wasn't
the Zonet. So I bought the Zonet. The Zonet works perfectly.

Mice not working is an issue with bad KVMs.
From what i've heard, so, collective experience, Belkin don't do

good KVM switches.
