I can't get the windows "Asus update" applet to work. It fails with a
"Cannot find BIOSINFO.DLL" then "No ASUS m/b detected"

So, I'm happy to updtae BIOS using the the DOS applet and a boot floppy, but
the BIOS files at the ASUS site don't have the normal *.ROM suffix, and
Afudos can't seem to see them.

Am I missing something obvious?

You are allowed to rename the file after it is decompressed.
For example, you download a 321KB ZIP file. You decompress it
and see a 524288 byte file and a 131072 byte file. What happens,
is sometimes a decompression tool gets carried away, and sees
something it thinks can be decompressed, in the BIOS file. That
is where the 131072 byte file has come from.

To verify you've got the right file, you crack open the manual
and note in the specification section, that the board has a
"4 megabit flash ROM". Well, 524288 is a power_of_two (2**19) and
also happens to be 524288*8 = 4Mbits. If you use a hex editor, the
last 80 bytes of the BIOS file, will contain the motherboard model
number, BIOS revision (ex. P4P81094), and the date that the BIOS
was made. (Making an archive copy of the BIOS currently in the
flash chip, will allow you to study the last 80 bytes as they
now stand in the BIOS file. Having an archival copy makes it
easier to see if the vital statistics match or not.)

With those consistency checks done, the next step is the file name
and extension. If you are using a feature like EZ flash, then the
filename must be changed to exactly K8VSEDX.ROM in your case.
If using a program like AFUDOS, perhaps just changing the
extension on the end of the file will be enough - i.e. 1007.AMI
becomes 1007.ROM .

Paul
