I was recently having problems with an old Win2K server that I set up as a
backup to replicate my active directory on my main W2K file server, so I
reinstalled the os and set it up again. Now I am getting errors every five
minutes on my event viewer that the knowledge consistency checker can not
connect with this old domain controller that has since been renamed. The
exact error message that I am getting is as follows:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: NTDS KCC
Event Category: Knowledge Consistency Checker
Event ID: 1307
Description:
The Directory Service consistency checker has noticed that 8 attempts to
establish a replication link with CN=NTDS
Settings, CN=NORTH-1F93BWP9X, CN-Servers, CN=Default-First-Site-Name,
CN=Sites, CN=Configuration, DC=northwyoming, DC=com have failed over a
period of 120 minutes. The connection object for this server will be kept in
place, and new a temporary connection will be established to ensure that
replication continues. Once a connection with CN=NTDS
Settings, CN=NORTH-1F93BWP9X, CN-Servers, CN=Default-First-Site-Name,
CN=Sites, CN=Configuration, DC=northwyoming, DC=com is established the
temporary connections will be removed.

I know I should have demoted the domain controller before I renamed it, but
how can I make things right now? Any ideas?

Also, would this issue cause my server to restart at all? I seem to have a
problem with this goes on for awhile.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

Sorry it took me so long to reply to you - the server was renamed when the
os was reinstalled to NORTH-ULD04YEID, so I demoted the domain controller
with that name and then reloaded the os and renamed it back to the original
dc name - NORTH-1F93BWP9X. I then tried to demote it with this name, but it
did not happen gracefully. I found some kb articles and ran some utilities
to try and clean it up. I think I have gotten everything cleaned up, but the
active directory sites and services still lists this dc and it tells me that
it can not delete a DSA object.

Any ideas are appreciated.
