Knowledge Base article 267831 describes my problem and
it's cause, and the errors I am getting in the event
viewer with utter accuracy. My platform is Windows 2000
server, service pack 4, on a Compaq ML350.

However, after offering a solution, KB 267831 adds a
caveat at the end, " If you have service pack 2 installed,
the solution we just offered doesn't work."

Before I try the solution, does my having service pack 4,
which has all the elements of service pack 2 included,
mean that the solution won't work for me?

And if so, what is the solution to this problem?

That's not what I read. The article reads ......
"If you apply Service Pack 2 to an already affected system, the problem that
is described in this article is not resolved."

Read the steps under "RESOLUTION"

Dave, I guess my question is, since I already have
service pack 4 installed on the 'affected system' before
I even knew I had a problem, does that mean the solution
won't work? In other words, service pack 4 has already
been applied to the affected system, and since service
pack 4 includes all the code of service pack 2, is it
logical to assume that the solution won't apply?

If this is the case, then what to do?

The solution in *any* case, as I read it, is to follow the steps under
"RESOLUTION" This, of course, assumes the article applies to the problem. As
far as I can tell the comment under "MORE INFORMATION" is worthless.
