I found a a German ftp site(ft.uni-kl.de/knoppix) with
Knoppix_V3.4-2004-04-04-EN.iso early yesterday and started downloading
with Star Downloader 1.42, using the default settings (4 threads, 30
second timeout).
The downloader struggled to keep going. The threads kept timing out
one after the other, while the overall throughput dwindled.
Eventually, I was able to improve unattended performance considerably
by increasing the timeouts to 240 seconds. But timeouts still
happened. The best throughput was obtained pausing and resuming the
download manually, as the throughput always increased substantially,
up to a maximum of 63KB/sec., and then slowly declined. But of course,
that wasn't possible during the night.
A couple of times Star Downloader not only timed out on all threads,
but closed itself down altogether. Another time, toward the end of the
download (after about a day and a half of downloading), the main menu
showed "time left: N/A","downloading", and "100%" on the progress bar,
while no data was being transferred, and three Megabytes were still
missing. After a manual pause and resume, it picked up again.
Finally, all four threads completed without any error messages. But
when I ran WinMD5 and DVDSig against the downloaded MD5 file, they
failed to match! I then went back to the same site and downloaded the
MD5sum again, and got a different sum from the one downloaded before
starting the iso download! Unfortunately, this one didn't match my
download's calculated MD5sum either.
