I used the www.microsoft.com/security website to check if
there were any security updates I needed for my Win2000
Pro Dell Inspiron laptop. It found 17, and something that
had to be loaded first. I let it do its thing, and
everything loaded okay, but when I went to reboot, I get
the blue screen of death and an error:
***STOP (and some numbers)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

I get this in safe mode as well. Any idea what I should do?

Try selecting "last known good configuration" from the startup list you get from
using F8 and if it works only install a few [four or so] critical updates at a time
while using safe mode with networking. If that does not help then try a repair
install booting from install cdrom and following prompts to the point where it asks
if you want to do a new installation or repair an existing one. You would then select
repair and even if you do not have a ERD floppy select fast repair and try rebooting
again. If that does not help you will probably need to reinstall the operating system
which could be done into existing \winnt folder without reformatting. That would
preserve your data if not EFS encrypted and you would have to reinstall applications
on top of themselves, go to Windows Update again, and copy data from your old user
profile under documents and settings. You may also need to reinstall some drivers
depending on what pnp finds.--- Steve

Max. Want to add that you might want to try an ugrade installation before a
total reinstall. The advantage is if it does work, you will not need to
reinstall applications and it is easy to try. See link below. --- Steve
