Hal Styli

Hello,

I occasionally get a few pop ups and IE windows that simply wont close.
Apart from getting a popup blocker (any recommendations) I would like to
know how I can
kill one window rather than all six if I have six web pages open at the same
time.

I run winxp and using task manager, if I kill one explorer window, they all
die.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Hal

Hi Hal :-)

First, do the following to make sure your system is clean of any scumware
that may cotrubute to the problem:

Download and install, then you *MUST* update the programs prior to running
to be sure they have the latest definitions, then run the programs below.
They are free and very effective. Be sure to run both SpyBot and Adaware,
as what one does not detect the other may. It is important that you do all
the steps and follow all directions carefully:

CWShredder: Free

SpyBot Search & Destroy: Free

IMPORTANT:
Before trying to remove spyware using the programs below, download a copy of
LSPFIX from the URL below - some malware may kill your internet connection
when it is removed, this program will enable you to regain your connection.

AdAware: Free

And... you have a program running which is blocking pop-up windows-
something like Yahoo Companion, Google toolbar, a firewall, Earthlink (or
another) pop-up blocker, etc.

You'll have to uninstall the program or turn off the feature that's blocking
new windows.

With some programs of this type, using Ctrl+click or Shift+click will allow
a new window.

Thanks Jan, Thats very useful.

Just to ease my mind on my knowledge of XP and IE it would still be nice to
know how to kill one instance of IE without bringing down all instances.

Thanks, Hal.

<major snip>

Usually the Parent Window is what spawns the child windows, therefore it is
unlikely that Ctrl-Alt-Del of the child windows will work. If it does, it
will usually kill the Parent window as well (IIRC; it's been a long time
since I've had those problems)

Some info:
A New Window Appears When You Visit Some Web Sites
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 308446
When you visit some Web sites, a new Internet Explorer window (or in some
cases, multiple new windows) may open. These windows often contain
advertisements.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308446

One thing to do if you haven't yet done so is to disable Windows Messenger
Service, as some sites use that to bombard you with these pop=up windows.
Since You *didn't say which OS* you're using, see here:

W2k, NT, XP, home, XP pro
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/

For W98 and ME:
Control Panel>Add/Remove programs>windows set-up tab>system
tools>details>un-check WinPopup>OK>apply>OK out. Re-boot if necessary.

Also, if you enable Active Scripting in the Internet Security Zone custom
configurations, you are opening a door for pop ups regardless if you have a
pop-up blocker. Advice: Disable (or at least set to prompt that feature)
Same for Active X (for other reasons).
