hi im in a situation where its possible a keylogger was secretly put
on my computer..possibly imbedded in a music or picture file sent to
me. there have been many strange coincidences...it would be a
keylogger that sends the info out, as no one has access to my home
computer...anyways, i d/l the trial version of anti keylogger but it
found nothing. one thing that is strange is that around the time i may
have got the keylogger(i think i know who would have sent it to me) my
computer stopped shutting down properly. its windows me- when i turn
it on, it always says iimproper shutdown etc. do you want me to check
files etc.. anyways seriously- i need some advice- i am stressed out
from this.

Sounds like Paraonia to me.

It seems unlikely for a keylogger program to cause these problems. In any
case, you really need to seek advice from more suitable forums like
alt.privacy.freeware or some of the anti-virus newsgroups.

I could give you the normal advice of installing checking your firewall
,posting HJT logs yada yada but this is really not the place.

Anti-keylogger software is good to detect common, popular keyloggers
aviailable in internet. If somebody write his own keylogger it is not
possible to detect it this way. Many popular keyloggers are detected by AV
software as trojans.
If you suspect that you've installed a keylogger or trojan opening binded
file - the way to find out if it happened is to know windows a bit and
check out running processes.
Get a process viewer and if you don't know which processes are normal
running in windows - you must enter full name of the file (for example
taskmon.exe) in google browser and check out the results.
Get a good startup manager and check out which applications are starting
with windows.

A keylogger detector could miss a keylogger IMO. There is however
another option. Keep in mind that a keylogger may/may not be working
all the time (I.E. when you are actually using the computer) in order
to avoid people noticing disk activity when they are doing nothing.

Try this :

(1) Start your computer.

(2) Make sure that all your "system" and "hidden" files can be seen.

(3) Disconnect from the net and make sure you have as close to no
programs/utilities running as possible.

(4) Do nothing for 1 1/2 hours.

(5) For the next 20 minutes write/save notepad "text" files. Then
stop.

(6) Show only files altered/created during the last 1 hour.

Every result should be in the notepad directory and/or where you saved
your notepad file(s). Anything else may be text, or screen captures,
from a keylogger.

Regards, John.

I would think that a keylogger program would be smart enough to not change
dates.

I would think that a keylogger program would be smart enough to not change
dates.

I would think that a keylogger program (generally) would NOT be smart
enough to avoid creating a date stamp for a newly created screen
capture file, or a new date stamp for a newly created text file
record. As well as "updates" to such files.

These "dates" would no doubt be the date created, or updated. Do
you have any experience of a keylogger creating a new file without it
being dated ? Or update an existing file without changing ir's date ?

I doubt it but if you have I would be interested in knowing it's name
so that I can check it out.

Regards, John.

Besides, how does he know he has a keylogger program on his computer?
It could just as well be that Swen virus.

Yes, a good alternative though would be as follows:
Turn off your 'puter.
If you have a front hall closet, open its door just a crack.
Go upstairs to your bedroom and change clothes - put on old clothing.
Go back downstairs and pick up your phone receiver and see if it is
working.
Grab your car keys and go to MacDonalds.
Buy a shake and drink half of it.
Go to 7-11 and buy a diet pepsi.
Drink half of it.
Go to Home Depot and buy a 15 pound sledgehammer.
Return home, but enter through the back or side door so nobody sees your
drinks and sledge.
Ensure power is off on your 'puter.
Unplug monitor. Take cover off box. Pull keyboard cable as far from the
'puter as you can.
Kick in the monitor screen with left foot.
Pour diet pepsi on the keyboard.
Take a sip of your shake then spill it on your lap.
Stand up allowing the shake to spill all over your desk.
Stand back and give the box a smash with the sledgehammer.

You now do not have to worry about anything bad on your computer,
