Keying troubles

When I highlight a word that I want to change with another word or delete by
hitting the backspace button, it no longer works. I used to be able to do
this and now all of a sudden it won't work. And because it used to I am
constantly trying to type that way and get frustrated when it doesn't work. I
don't know where to change the setting for this. Please help!

Go to Tools > Options > Edit (or if you have Word 2007, go to Office button
Word Options > Advanced) and check the box for "Typing replaces
