Matt

I turned on my computer yesterday and found a very strange
problem. My PS2 keyboard was no longer working in Windows
XP; however, I wasn't getting any "keyboard not found"
errors. I restarted my computer and was able to get into
the BIOS by pressing "Delete". In the BIOS, all the keys
appeared to work. While the Windows XP logo is on the
screen the, number lock light turns on and then goes off.
Once Windows XP loads, the mouse works fine, but it
doesn't receive any input from the keyboard.

I checked the Device Manager and the keyboard is there. I
booted in safe mode and had the exact same problem. I
went out and bought a USB keyboard and I am having same
problem and symptoms with that keyboard. I updated my
virus definitions and did a scan to no avail. I am
Obviously, this is a problem in Windows XP somewhere. I
have searched newsgroups and the only person who had a
problem similar to mine did not receive any responses.

Good news is I can still use the on screen keyboard and my
mouse, so I can make backups if the only solution may be a
clean install of Windows.

Update - I got the keyboard working. I did a repair installation of Windows XP and it took care of the problem.

how do i do this repair installation can u plz guide me i

want to lose any of my programs as i have installed

You can do the repair installation if you have a retail copy of XP.

Read this all the way thru before starting.

You will need to do a repair install. Follow these steps:

Set your BIOS to have the CD drive as the first boot device.

Start the operating system from the CD-ROM,

When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware

and then prompts you to select one of the following options:

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER.

Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system

prompts you to select one of the following options:

To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press
ESC.

Press R to start the automatic repair process. After repairing Windows XP,
set your BIOS back to have the hard drive as the first boot device.

Have your Product Key at hand as you will probably have to re-activate.

You will probably need re-download all updates, starting with SP1. You can
go to the Windows site and download the XP Rollup 1 package, which will make
the reinstalling of the updates
much easier and quicker.

The repair installation should leave all your data and settings intact, but
you may want to backup critical data.

It's not the only computer who having this problem here, i would like to find a generic solution for this problem.

I've had an almost identical problem. I think it started after I downloaded all of the recommended updates that came with my "auto Update" program. My "enter" key may only work once after I start up. There has got to be a connection between this problem and the updates. If not, why have they all popped up after downloading Microsaft products. Any help out there would be greatly appeciated by everyone.

I'm seeing this at work with three Dell XP Pro workstations, seems to
be intermittent and all occurred after the security updates of the
past two weeks. None of the keyboards are USB and the problems range
from lockup to just malfunctioning of the enter key. A real PITA.
Nothing from Microsoft yet?

We are seeing the same issues here and wondered if you have found any

I am having somewhat the same problem, I installed a new
Mobo and now the keyboard works in the bios and for a
little while after it boots up but stops working
eventually every time. My pc is not locked up, I can
still shut it down using the power button and the mouse
locks up also. If you come across an answer please post!

.
I found this same problem, by accident I held the right
shift key down for about 30-45 sec. and I could type as
always. Don't know what causes this. Would hope for a
fix!!

Nothing fixed yet, have tried several different keyboards, also
wireless, problems persist with the enter key. I'm starting to think
this may be a new type of worm/trojan and will proceed to clean out
cookies, temp internet files and clean with Hijackthis. We rolled back
one system with restore and eliminated recent system ms updates and
still had the problem. Nothing showing in "problem devices" or events
that would seem to trigger this. It's still a mystery.
