Since this thursday, for no apparent reason, my
enter/return key periodically stops working and i have to
restart. It can be anything from 5 minutes to 3 hours
before it does it again. The return key is the only key
which doesn't respond; all the others are fine. I have
changed the keyboard and it does the same with both. Even
clicking enter on the on-screen keyboard has no effect. I
have not changed any settings or options which could have
caused this. I have tried restoring my system. The
keyboard is just a standard keyboard plugged into the
keyboard port. Any help or explanation would be
gratefully received as i rely on this key for work
purposes. (I use Windows XP Home).

Three things:
A. Shutdown and then disconnect the keyboard plug from the jack. Wait
about a minute while you check the plug and jack for dust, etc,
[anything eventually needs checking/cleaning]. Reconnect and restart to
see if problem solved.
B. Remove then reinstall the keyboard software to see if that resolves
the problem.
C. The Keyboard may just be failing. Again, nothing lasts forever. They
are cheap. If you need it for use, go buy one.

I've tried disconnecting it, i've tried a different
keyboard and they didnt come with any software...unless
you mean some form of microsoft software for keyboards
generally

I have the same exact problem that dc has in the previous discussion. And it happened around last wed or thurs. I did what was said with uninstalling, ect, even bought a new keyboard, and still no enter key.

i ve tried everthing ,another keyboard , reinstall driver etc.......but still no enter key.

I had this happen on a couple of computers and I found that spyware
was the cause of this malfunction. I'v checked ports, swapped out
keyboards and it still happened. The computers that this seemed to
happen to had numerous search bars and ad programs installed. By
using Ad-aware I was able to remove these programs and the problem has
not returned. Ad-aware can be downloaded for free at www.download.com

Hope this helps!
