I recently bought a new keyboard which connected to my computer very simply,
and works just fine, however... I don't like it as well as my old Dell
keyboard. It's a usb connection and the Dell was a ps(I think that's what
they call it.. I'm a little illiterate here :^)) Anyway... I connected the
Dell, and it does NOTHING.. I've tried everything I can figure out, and still
nothing.. does anyone know what driver I would need, and/or where I could
find it to download.. or is that even the problem??
Sorry so stupid here... Thank you for any info you can provide.

The ps/2 connector is the little round one. Make sure you put it in the
correct ps/2 connector and not the one for the mouse. The purple one with
the picture of the keyboard next to it is where you want it. Also, never
plug in/plug out a ps/2 device with the computer on.

Turn the computer off and connect your old ps/2 keyboard. There are no
special drivers needed; it should just work. If the lights aren't on and
you can't use it before Windows starts (try to get into the BIOS for
instance by pressing F2), then you know that either the keyboard or the
ps/2 connector on the motherboard is broken. Test by connecting the
keyboard to another computer. If it doesn't work there either, it's broken
- throw it out. If another ps/2 keyboard doesn't work on your computer, the
motherboard connection is broken. Stick with a USB keyboard as a
workaround.

If you plug in some PS2 keyboards they don't "take" unless you do a full
power down restart of the system. Have you tried that? Have you plugged in
the keyboard to another computer to see if it works there?

Look in the end of the connector cable and see if there is a small
rectangular key post with 6 pins surrounding the post. If any of the pins
are missing or bent, that would be your problem. Time for a different
keyboard.

Let us know what you find out.

Hi and THANK YOU VERY MUCH... I am now typing with the
*old* keyboard!! I had noticed after i wrote that the lights went on when I
first made contact, then went off, so tried rebooting again, and whalla!!
now after all of that I will probably end up reverting back to the newer
one... lol. Really I doubt it tho... could never hit the right keys with it.
The keys were down lower, and you couldn't get the legs on the keyboard to
stay up so it layed way flatter than this one.
Again.. THANK YOU!! I don't know what I would do without this newsgroup..
It has answered SO MANY questions for me!!

I'm so glad that sorted it for you. I'm very fussy about my keyboards so I
completely understand why you wanted your old one back. I still have a
bunch of the old IBM clicky keyboards!

Thanks for taking the time to let us know things worked out for you.

Hi Malke,

New Keyboard Question:

I have a desk top with windows XP Pro. that won't recognize the wireless
keyboard or the PS/2 keyboard. The ps/2 mouse works unless I plug in the ps/2
keboard. Then they both are out of order. Also the wireless mouse does not
work. Keyboard and Mouse both have new batteries. I have downloaded new
software for this Logitech Wave Keyboard/Mouse combo but no luck. I get a
notice that the drivers are downloaded OK but the keyboard is not found -
location 0? Another tip is when I open Word it says that Windows notices that
the configuration has changed and I need to put the original CDs in which I
don't have. One other thing, I saw on the device manager is that the keyboard
had some unknown devices loaded near the keyboard area. Also there was a
yellow on all of them. The HIS keyboard had yellow on it as well. Hope this
makes sense to you!

Got any advise for me?

Thanks,

Paul

I'm terribly sorry but you have so many issues with this computer that it is
impossible for me to diagnose it without being able to see the machine. I
suggest you take it to a competent local computer tech (bring your various
keyboards/mice with you). I don't recommend using a
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

I'm sorry that I was unable to help you.

Do you take hardware (driver) updates from Windows Update ?

Back a while ago, a driver was offered which was not appropriate
for many computers. I don't think this would account for all your
symptoms, but you may have installed this by mistake. In general,
don't take driver updates from Windows Update. Get your drivers
from the manufacturer, as they may have been tested.

"Beware of the Ideacom driver update"

Removal instructions here. Basically, use the driver rollback
function for the affected device. Driver rollback works for one
level of driver foulup. It is a button in Device Manager.

Malke,

Thanks for responding. I will let you know when I get it straigtened out.

What do you think of deleting all of the keyboard drivers and build it up
from there? Also just use a ps/2 keyboard.

Best Regards,

Paul
