Someone in my early years of computer use 1997, once showed me really USEFUL
shortcut which I didn't think was something worth remembering - how to delete
the entire URL in an address bar without removing the http:// protocol code
- you could quickly remove a site address (some of which are v.long) and key
in a new address.

Does anyone out there know what the shortcut is, please?

The closest I can think of is to click once on the old address so that it's
highlighted, type in the new address (which overtypes the old one) and press
Ctrl+Shift+Enter. This will add the http:// prefix (in IE7, at least -
probably other versions, too). Not exactly what you describe, but perhaps
close enough.

The other similar tip is Ctrl+Enter - it adds http:// and .com around what
you've typed.

....or, of course just type in the address and press Enter to get http://
prefixed... <slaps own forehead>
