When I first turned on the laptop it asked me what type of keyboard it was, I
clicked the one it told me to, I think I said it was a US standard one or
something, but have realised it is obviously not. It works fine, it just
means if I press the button that is meant to be '@' It somes up as a
quotation mark and vice versa, there are a few other annoying things, and I
don't seem to have a pound symbol, it results in '#'. I'm sure it said I
could change the settings in control panel but I can't find it and I'm going
mental. Help?

Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options.
On the Regional Options page, change the two entries to English
(United Kingdom).
On the Languages page, hit the Details button.
This should bring up "Text Services and Input Languages".
On the Settings page hit the Add button.
In the "Add Input Language" dialog, change the Input Language
to English (United Kingdom).
Next, change the default input language to English (United
Kingdom).
Click OK.
Back in "Regional and Language Options", click on the Advanced
tab.
Change the "Language for non-Unicode Programs" to English (UK).
Click OK.

Good luck
