Keyboard problem

Hi,

Can anyone please advise what could be causing the following problem?

On booting up a PC running Windows XP I'm presented with the following
error mesage:

Error: Stuck Key 44 Press F1 to continue

On pressing F1 the PC continues to boot up OK.

Something that may be related - When IE is open I can see "File" on
the top bar flashing VERY quickly - possibly due to the misoperation
of key 44.

Any info on this would be much appreciated.

Remove the INVALID to reply
 
a dirty key or a broken contact on the key. Clean it or
replace the keyboard.

Hi Jim

Thanks for your reply - does this mean that the error message is
generic and that it doesn't indicate that a key, numbered 44, is the
problem?

Remove the INVALID to reply
 
No, it means that a key #44 (I don't know which it is yet,
haven't Googled) is stuck for some reason. It could be
dirty, a chunk of dirt could be wedged under the cap,
depressing the switch or the switch could be broken.
You can try cleaning by shaking the keyboard up-side down,
using compressed air, even prying a key cap off. Or you can
try another keyboard, they can be cheap.

Looks like the left shift key.

Smart guy. Key #44 is the Left Shift key.

I used "computer keyboard key #44" without the quotes. The
site I selected was about 5th on the page.

Hi all -

I suddenly have an issue that's acting like a stuck key, machine is
booting and it beeps a lot, hitting abunch of keys seems to stop it.
I also noticed that suddenly some keyboard functions related to my
left shift key are seemingly broken. For instance Left Shift and End
should hilight to the end of my row, but it doesn't. Right Shift and
End works fine. So anyway, upon seeing the Left Shift key error in
this thread, I was wondering if anyone had heard of a virus or the
like that was affecting key functionality?

No, but I've seen keyboards do that after they've had a drink spilled on
them. Or if a pet hair or bit of cellophane was stuck under the key. A good
cleaning will take care of those problems. I've also worn out keys - had
one where the N wouldn't work unless you mashed it a few times. No fixing
possible for that keyboard, it needed replacing.
