just plug it in...that's all there is to it...
if it does not work...
try a different keyboard...

if it *still* does not work, then the ps/2 port is bad...

no sweat...just use a USB keyboard

Why remove the power lead?.. a shut down followed by restart would be
perfectly acceptable..

Hi Mike, because with modern motherboards and ATX PSU's the board can be
still live and in a standby mode waiting for a wakeup call either from a
LAN, modem, keyboard or some other device. If that is the case then the PSU
connectors must have power going to them and there is a risk, small maybe,
of causing a spike. I certainly would not take that risk...

Keyboard, mice and USB devices are perfectly safe to plug/unplug while the
power lead is in place, even with the system running.. internal devices
directly connected to the PS should never been connected/disconnected while
the system is powered up.. but I would not remove the power cable for that
either.. if the PS has a switch, it is best to use that as the case and
internals will at least still be earthed through the power lead..
