keyboard locked up in word

Typing away in a word document without looking at the
screen, I inadvertently hit several wrong keys including
the control key. When I glanced up at the screen the
toolbar was shaded lighter than normal and the keyboard
was inoperable. I couldn't even type into the help
search box. I exited and restarted. I also checked the
cords as well as reloaded Office onto the computer with
default settings. No luck. The keyboard works in all
other software, but not Word. This is a new computer.

Keyboards and their drivers are amusing for the brain twisting
errors of their ways. People often unplug them while power is
on, thereby inducing a short in the circuitry.

To speed up diagnostics, try one of the oldest tricks in the
book:

Power down PC
Disconnect keyboard (cord and all) from PC
Attach a working keyboard (same exact model) from a
different PC. Plug its cord into PC.
Power up
Try keyboard.

If that works, the disconnected keyboard may be defective.

If the none of the above works, reinstall keyboard driver and
re-boot.

Let us know how this goes. Good luck.

If the keyboard works in all other apps, though, as described, then it's
probably not a keyboard issue.

Suzanne,

Of course, you're right. I forgot about
keyboard working in other apps. I'm
making a pledge not to reply after 9 PM.
I must take anti-cancer drugs at 8 PM
and am kinda sleepy/nutty by 10. <g>

When you use your mouse, take a look at the menus. Are many options
disabled? If so, you need to activate your copy of Word. There is a command
to do this under the Help menu.
