What does it do? I just had a strange occurrence in Word. Options all
at defaults but as I typed, the old letters deleted and overtype mode
was not checked . Went to another doc that worked right -- inserting.
Came back to first doc, and now it's inserting like it always did.
Also, in Word at bottom of window the OVR option and three next to it
are grayed -- looks like each goes on if checked in Options, then if
clicked goes gray. Help appreciated.

What does it do? Looks like you figured that out already, but to recap, it
toggles between inserting text inside existing text, and inserting text by
replacing existing text.

What effect this has on your particular application(s) is dependant upon
those applications.
